On October 31, 2009, I attended a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the decision in Syracuse, NY, to establish a union between the Universalists and the Unitarians. A year and a half later, in 1961, the Unitarian Universalist Association was officially born. The word order or the resulting association gave Universalists the noun; the Unitarians were relegated to adjective. Why, then, do we so often refer to ourselves as Unitarians? My thesis for this morning is that we are truly Universalists and that Universalism is central to what we have to offer to the 21st century. Let us claim our heritage!
